R.I.P's

Keith Little at 87 years of age

You don't know his name or any of the other Navajo Code Talkers from WWII, but you do know their story and what they accomplished. Keith Little, one of the remaining surviving Codetalkers, passed away on Tuesday. There are now only 3 Navajo codetalkers left.

Keith was only 17 years old when he joined the Marine Corps and was trained as a Codetalker.

The Codetalkers were from many Native American nations and started in WWI with the Choctaw language. However, it was the use of Navajo in WWII that may have changed the entire outcome of the war. The Japanese were unable to break the code. Astonishingly, once a word was used as code over the radio it was NEVER USED AGAIN. The code proved infallible.

"The Navajo code talkers were commended for their skill, speed and accuracy accrued throughout the war. At the Battle of Iwo Jima, Major Howard Connor, 5th Marine Division signal officer, had six Navajo code talkers working around the clock during the first two days of the battle. These six sent and received over 800 messages, all without error. Connor later stated, "Were it not for the Navajos, the Marines would never have taken Iwo Jima.""

Keith Little's dream was a museum to honor the memory of the Navajo in WWII and his surviving relatives say they will continue to pursue this with a museum in Arizona.

The Navajo nation will be celebrating Mr. Little's life today and tomorrow at his funeral. Flags are flying half-staff until Sunday in his honor.

Wiki Article on the use of Navajo Language

And the saddest news of the day comes from the Amazon. This is unconscionably sick. Brazilian loggers killed an 8 year old girl by tying her to a tree and setting her on fire.

"Loggers in Brazil who had illegally entered an Amazon Indian reserve captured an eight-year-old indigenous girl and burned her alive, it was claimed today.
The child, who belonged to the isolated Gwaja-Awa tribe, is believed to have wandered away from her village to play and got lost in the forest."

This story doesn't deserve to be covered up, so we are posting it here. We may never know this little girl's name but we mourn her no less. May she rest in peace.

And may the men who did this burn in hell.

R.I.P - Cheetah

Cheetah, "Boy", Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O' Sullivan (1930's)

Cheetah, Johnny Weissmuller's co-star in the 1930's Tarzan films, passed away at age 80 on Christmas Eve.

He had been living at a sanctuary since before we were born!

"Cheetah came to the sanctuary from Weissmuller's estate sometime around 1960."

Wow! Good job to the people at the sanctuary! It's obvious that they must've taken good care of him all these years.

R.I.P. Harry Morgan

Our beloved Colonel Potter has finally crossed over at age 96 after a long and rewarding life.

Harry Morgan was a veteran character actor and will always be remembered for his role as Colonel Sherman Potter on the best TV show ever, MASH.

When asked if working with the cast of MASH had made him a better actor he replied: "I don't know about that, but it's made me a better human being."

Go and rent "Inherit the Wind", one of best movies ever and you'll catch Harry Morgan, who looked old even then, working with the industries best, Spencer Tracy, Fredric March and a young Dick York. You can't miss Harry, he's the Judge!

Of course, to some he'll be remembered from Dragnet or maybe one of the 700 movies or tv shows he was in.

He'll be missed (even though everyone thought he died 20 years ago)

R.I.P Smokin' Joe

Former Heavyweight Champion and Olympic Gold Medalist Smokin' Joe Frazier passed away last night. He was a Philadelphia icon and he will be missed by all of Philadelphia and beyond.

Don King, the Thrilla in Manila promoter, put out a moving statement this morning:

"Frazier was "the embodiment of what a great heavyweight champion and person should be. Not only was he a great fighter but also a great man. He lived as he fought with courage and commitment at a time when African-Americans in all spheres of life were engaged in a struggle for emancipation and respect," King said of Frazier. "Smokin' Joe brought honor, dignity and pride for his people, the AMERICAN people, and brought the nation together as only sports can do.""

George Forman tweeted this: "Good night Joe Frazier. I love you dear friend."

Philadelphia's fictional boxer, Rocky Balboa, was totally based on Smokin' Joe, right down to the slaughterhouse slabs of meat that Rocky worked out on as Joe worked in such a shop back in the day.

Joe's Olympic Gold medal was chopped into 11 pieces by a jeweler so he could give a piece to each one of his children. All 11 of them.

Ali-Frazier-Forman formed a triumvirate of Boxing Glory that encompassed a Golden Age that America or the sport will likely never see again.

Russian Ice Hockey Team Killed in Plane Crash

Lokomotiv ice hockey team.
They all perished in the plane crash

Terrible news from Russia today as we learn that most everyone on board a small plane were killed on take off.

The Yak-42 aircraft was leaving Yaroslavl, north of Moscow, and flying to Minsk in Belarus.

It crashed immediately after take-off from the city, which is on the Volga River about 150 miles from the capital.

The Emergency Situations Ministry said 45 people had been on board and only two are believed to have survived.

The Lokomotiv ice hockey team from Yaroslavl, a leading force in Russian hockey, were travelling on the plane.

They were going to Belarus for the opening game of the season in the Kontinental Hockey League against Dinamo Minsk on Thursday.

The wreckage, from Russian TV, on the Volga River

"Lokomotiv is coached by Canadian Brad McCrimmon, former Detroit Red Wings assistant, and includes several international stars in its ranks, such as goalkeeper Stefan Liv of Sweden and Czech Republic players Karel Ranuchek, Josef Vasicek and Jan Marek and Slovakia's Pavol Demitra.

Demitra, the Slovakian national team captain, played in the NHL for the St. Louis Blues and Vancouver Canucks. Other top names include Russian defensemen Ruslan Salei and Karlis Skrastins."

This is unbelievably tragic and hits close to home. Brad McCrimmon played for the NHL for 18 seasons. He spent years as a Philadelphia Flyers (1982-1987) playing with Big Tim Kerr, Brian Prop and the Sutter Brothers. He was a GREAT defenseman. After retiring as a player he became a coach on several teams.

He will be missed.

R.I.P. - Budd Hopkins and Stuart Miller - UPDATED

Budd Hopkins

2 well known UFO researchers have passed away.

Budd Hopkins was the most well known alien abduction researcher in the world. He wrote the most famous book in the field, Missing Time (among others) and was singlehandedly responsible for bringing the abduction phenomenon into the mainstream.

Hopkins was well liked amongst UFOlogists and his passing is an enormous loss to the field and the world in general.

We at The Omni Report have been greatly influenced by Budd and the news of his passing just yesterday at age 80 makes us very very sad.

He took the "alien abduction phenomenon" from the whacked out fringes of society to a serious level. His book Missing Time is now a classic work and is no longer a laughing matter. His influence on Harvard Researcher John Mack opened up the topic to serious research. Sadly, we lost John Mack years ago to an untimely accident, but Mack's seminal work, Abduction, was the direct result of Budd Hopkin's tireless cause to helping those who feel they have been abducted by aliens.

Mack's stance from the beginning was that whether or not you believe in alien abductions is besides the point. Thousands of people DO believe its happened to them and he set out to document the phenomena, saying, if it's not aliens then we have to find out what's happening to these people because to them it's very real. Is it a mass hysteria type situation or are people really being abducted?

The two men gave credence not only to each other's work but to all of humanity having to deal with this "sensitive" issue.

From the Intruder Foundation Website:

"Budd Hopkins has long been considered ufology's most visible figure. He pioneered and continues to lead the investigation into the most controversial aspect of the UFO phenomenon-the systematic abduction of human beings by UFO occupants. As the world's premier expert on this issue, he has worked with more than one thousand people who have reported abduction experiences over the past twenty years. These individuals come from all walks of life and include physicians, psychiatrists, attorneys, police officers, military personnel, political figures, personalities from the entertainment world, and even a NASA scientist."

We will miss Budd and his work greatly.

Stuart Miller, one of the most well-known British UFO researchers, was killed in a motorcycle accident over the weekend.

Stuart, most well known for his online magazine, UFO Review, was also very well liked in the community. His friend, Paul Kimball wrote this:

"one of the truly good guys in ufology...a genuinely good man, full of joie de vivre, wit, humour, and a true spirit of adventure and humanity. He will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know him."

The passing of these two greats in their field, THE SAME FIELD, is a terrible set back for abduction theorists and all of UFOlogy.

It is now up in the air as to who will continue the work of these two wonderful and open minded gentlemen.

You can read more about Budd here at his Intruders Foundation website.

Update - Stuart Miller sadly passed away in May of 2011, not this last weekend as originally thought. The information is just being released now, hence the confusion. The Omni Report thanks Mr. Paul Kimball who graciously informed us of our mistake. Our condolences to you, Paul, and all of Mr. Miller's fans, friends, family and followers. He will be missed.

Live Like a Jackass, Die Like a Jackass

First off, we are sorry for his friends and family who are grieving for Ryan Dunn, one of the "Jackass" crew made famous by their jackass stunts.

We are angry as hell at Ryan Dunn for driving 140MPH while twice the legal limit. What would his friends and family do for the friends and families of someone he could have killed. Never mind that HE DID IN FACT KILL SOMEONE. A seasoned war veteran, no less. Zachary Hartwell was a Navy veteran who served as a gunner's mate in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

Zach survived in Afghanistan, defying the odds, only to be killed by his friend after a night of heavy drinking.

How fucking sad and depraved.

They are reporting Dunn had over 23 prior offenses for DUI and speeding in the 13 years before his fatal accident. He WAS a "Jackass"!

An open note to Bam Margera,
Make good and do a PSA against drunk driving. Forgive Roger Ebert and move on.

R.I.P.: Clarence Clemens

The world lost its best saxophone player this weekend when 69 year old Clarence Clemens passed away from complications from a stroke. Clarence was a great guy and will be missed. His years in the E Street Band were legendary.

His latest project was playing sax for Lady Gaga for her new song "Edge of Glory."

Anyone else remember him in "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure"?

“Clarence lived a wonderful life,” Bruce Springsteen said in a statement. “He carried within him a love of people that made them love him. He created a wondrous and extended family. He loved the saxophone, loved our fans and gave everything he had every night he stepped on stage." Springsteen added that the loss of Clemons, known as the Big Man, "is immeasurable" and that he and his bandmates "are honored and thankful to have known him and had the opportunity to stand beside him for nearly 40 years."

From their Anaheim, Calif., show on Saturday, U2's Bono addressed their audience: "I want you to think about a beautiful symphonic sound that came out of one man's saxophone."

America's Tsunami

What's left of Tuscaloosa, Alabama

Faye Hyde sits on a mattress in what was her yard in Conord, Alabama as she comforts her two-year-old granddaughter Sierra Goldsmith

Homes and businesses are completely destroyed
along 15th St. in Tuscaloosa, Alabama

The tornado's that have destroyed parts of the American south have been dubbed by British newspapers as "The American Tsunami."

Thankfully, England's newspapers have turned from the royal wedding long enough to send prayers and acknowledgement of the cataclysmic destruction from yesterday's storms. Indeed it has pushed the imminent nuptials OFF the front pages for once and taken over the headlines. IN EVERY NEWSPAPER. (Thank God the World or at least some editor still has some sense left.)

It was the worst tornado outbreak in over 40 years. We've never in our life seen anything like it and pray to God we never see it again. Over 300 people died in one night.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the people whose lives were ruined yesterday. We cannot pretend nothing happened and watch the Stupid Royal Wedding. We know better and will be unable to sit and watch pomp and circumstance knowing so many people died and so many more are without homes, jobs, roads and power today.

God save us. If this is what's to come in 2012, we're all fucked!

PLEASE DONATE GENEROUSLY TO THE RED CROSS. PEOPLE NEED YOUR HELP.

Red Cross.org

"More than 1,600 people sought refuge in 65 Red Cross shelters Wednesday night as the storms forced them from their homes. Red Cross shelters are open in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Missouri, Indiana, Kentucky, Arkansas, North Carolina and Texas."

PS: Okay...we lie...we're gonna watch the stupid royal wedding..just a little... ;)
But we're all still fucked.

As far as media coverage on "royal" wedding vs other major important things, we like Dan Rather's take on it. Read here HERE

R.I.P Sidney Lumet

"I'M MAD AS HELL AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE"

We all know that line from the classic movie "Network", when actor Peter Finch tells his nightly news audience to go to their windows, open them and yell those words at the top of their lungs.

Network was one of 50 movies that Director Sidney Lumet gave us over the years.

Lumet passed away yesterday at age 86, leaving an incredible legacy of silver screen gems.

Network alone won 4 Academy Awards and is so respected as a film that it's accolades continue decades later. "In 2000, the film was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". In 2002, it was inducted into the Producers Guild of America Hall of Fame as a film that has "set an enduring standard for U.S. American entertainment." In 2006, the script was voted one of the top-ten movie scripts by the Writers Guild of America, East and in 2007, the film was 64th among the Top 100 Greatest U.S. American Films as chosen by the American Film Institute."

Who could forget Al Pacino yelling "Attica, Attica, Attica" in "Dog Day Afternoon"? A 1975 film about a bank robbery gone as bad as it can get. Pacino shines in the role and was nominated for an Academy Award. In all the movie was nominated for 7 but only won one.

Our favorite Sidney Lumet film was by far, one of the greatest films of all time, we LOVE it so so so much, "12 Angry Men." This movie is so awesome that it just leaves you stunned at the end thinking, "This is what movies are supposed to be. This is the gold standard. Do movies get any better than this?"

What makes 12 Angry Men, a movie about a particular trial jury deliberation, so awesome is in part, the caliber of actors - all 12 are the best - and in part the story and how it unravels, but mostly it's the style of it. This movie has a style about it that has never been met or beat in all these years. It's almost like a single shot play and you have the front row seat.

Watching each of the 12 men deliberate the evidence and having the entire scenario questioned by Henry Fonda's character, Juror #8, in the first place makes "12 Angry Men" an awesome movie.

In 2007, 12 Angry Men was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

SO R.I.P Sidney Lumet and thank you for all the great movies. You were one of the greatest movie directors of all time.

Scene from 12 Angry Men - Henry Fonda is SO GREAT in this movie. Recognize a young Jack Klugman?

Another scene from 12 Angry Men, it's actor Lee Cobb's best moment

Iconic scene from Network. Rings true even today.

Al Pacino at his best. "He wants to kill me so bad he can taste it. Put your fucking guns down! ATTICA!"

Elizabeth Taylor: New Secrets Revelaed

From the Daily Beast article by Kevin Sessums

Kessums reveals today a secret the Elizabeth told him 14 years ago that she didn't want told until after her death. He sure didn't wait long. He's probably been chomping this bit for years to get it off his chest.

Taylor revealed to him during a 1997 interview at her Bel Air home, that during the filming of the iconic classic movie Giant, she and Jimmy Dean would "talk and talk" for hours every night and that he told her he had been "molested by his minister" and that it "haunted him the rest of his life."

" "I loved Jimmy. I'm going to tell you something, but it's off the record until I die. OK? When Jimmy was 11 and his mother passed away, he began to be molested by his minister. I think that haunted him the rest of his life. In fact, I know it did. We talked about it a lot. During Giant we'd stay up nights and talk and talk, and that was one of the things he confessed to me." "

Also, revealed by fashion icon Valentino this tidbit about "Saint Elizabeth" (quotations are ours):

"I remember when she sold all her jewels in early '80s to build 15 hospitals in Africa... and how much money she raised for AmFAR that helped fund the research that is one of the main reasons today people infected with HIV can live normally.

"In 1991 we created together a charity for children with AIDS in Italy, and I personally saw her sitting on the floor next to terminally sick people, holding their hands and comforting them."

That is really awesome. Did you get all of that?

SHE SOLD ALL HER JEWELS TO
BUILD 15 HOSPITALS IN AFRICA.

It doesn't get any better than that. Plus, she sat with dying people and held their hands. She was a spectacular person.

Taylor was a founding AmFAR (The American Foundation for AIDS Research) member in 1985.

The organization re-issued a statement that they created for one of her birthdays a few years ago:

"All your life you were known for your beauty. During the past two decades or so, we gradually came to take that beauty for granted, but we were also constantly arrested by your other qualities. We were staggered by your grace under fire. We were inspired by your outspoken honesty in the face of the disbelievers. And we were comforted by your deep compassion for all those living with HIV/AIDS." amfAR will remember and honor Elizabeth Taylor for keeping the faith and for inspiring us year after year to keep going until this devastating epidemic is conquered."

On the business side, her perfume, White Diamonds, was/is the highest selling fragrance OF ALL TIME and in the 20+ years since it was released, has made over $60 Million. Amazing!

R.I.P. KNUT "The People's Bear" - UPDATED

Baby Knut in 2006

Knut, Berlin's beloved polar bear was found dead in his enclosure today.

"He was by himself in his compound, he was in the water, and then he was dead," said Kloes. "He was not sick, we don't know why he died."

A post mortem will be conducted on Monday to try pinpoint his cause of death, he said.

Between 600 and 700 people were at Knut's compound and saw the four-year-old bear die, German news agency DAPD reported."

Poor Knut! We cannot believe he just died like that. And in front of such a huge crowd. He was the cutest baby animal ever and a great "poster" boy for polar bears in general. Very sad news today from Germany.

We forgot that Knut's keeper, known as Knut's Dad, Thomas Doerflein, also died very suddenly of a heart attack a few years ago. We know they are together now on the other side.

Knut and Thomas in 2006

R.I.P Knut!

UPDATE:
Knut did not go gently into that good night. HORRIFIC video has surfaced of Knut's last moments and it's gut wrenchingly awful. The ONLY solace is that his agony lasted no longer than a minute or two and then he was gone. But he did suffer. He is shown turning in circles, twitching his leg terribly and raising it up like it hurt. Then going into convulsions, and with an agonizing roar he loses control and tumbles into his pool dying. You can see the water still thrashing from the convulsions for about 5 seconds and then nothing. He didn't surface. We don't even think he drowned because the splashing didn't last for more than a few seconds. It looks like he stroked out.

Onlookers screamed in horror and then just started yelling and crying.

POOT KNUT! We are just heart broken. We don't think the zoo could have done anything. It happened too fast. One minute he was fine, the next he was twitching and then tumbling over dead. Even if they got him with a tranquilizer...nothing...it happened so suddenly. Terrible. Poor Knut!

Knut all grown up in recent picture...

There are so many pages on here already, its amazing how touched people are/were by Knut. Cut and paste some of the notes into TRANSLATOR and you'll be amazed at the nice things the German people have to say. Many, many notes are in English though. It's so sad.

Here's an example:

Lieber Knut,

Dear Knut,

I am very sad that you have left us so early again. But the idea that you have returned to be with your mentor can relieve the pain somewhat.

Thank you for the many beautiful moments where you have let us participate

And there's poetry for Knut too:

Knut,

your fluffy white hair
curious black eyes
all the sweetness you have

i won't forget.

Good night, have a nice dream sweety.

That's from all of us. Good night and have a nice dream, Little Knut, you Sweetie Bear.

R.I.P Nate Dogg

Nate Dogg passed away last night at 41 years of age. He had 2 strokes in the past couple of years that probably led to this untimely death.

Nate Dogg was a West Coast Hip Hop Legend. He was high school friends with Snoop Dogg and the two were very close and collaborated on alot of music together. He rapped with Ludacris and Warren G regularly.

Snoop Dogg had this to say via Twitter today: "We lost a true legend n hip hop n rnb. One of my best friends n a brother to me since 1986 when I was a sophomore at poly high where we met," tweeted Snoop Dogg, who continued on for several tweets before concluding, "RIP NATE DOGG."

"Watashi-tachi wa anata no tame ni inotte iru"

"We are praying for you"
私たちはあなたのために祈りを捧げています

Our thoughts and prayers are with our Japanese friends on this desperate day. The Omni Report takes a strong stance against the Japanese Whalers and often ridicules the Japanese but would never wish this upon thousands of innocent people. We are devastated.

This earthquake at 8.9 was 8,000 stronger than the New Zealand earthquake. EIGHT THOUSAND TIMES STRONGER.

It stands now as the 5th largest ever recorded.

"Tonight, huge fires burned unabated across large parts of the country as damaged oil refineries and gas works billowed black smoke into the sky.

Half the country was understood to be without power, with four million homes in Tokyo alone being cut off, while the army has been deployed to the quake-hit areas to help relief efforts.

However those relief efforts were hampered by a number of aftershocks, including a 6.6 magnitude tremor which hit Tokyo and caused already damaged buildings to shake further.

Elsewhere, two high-speed bullet trains were missing alongside a cruise ship carrying 100 passengers that was swept away when the wave hit. One of the trains was reported to be carrying 400 passengers.

A state of emergency was declared at a nuclear power plant in Fukushima after the 8.9 quake caused the cooling system to fail"

The nuclear plant could cause a world-wide disaster ala Chernobyl if there is a radiation leak. We HOPE they can contain this admist all the other problems they are having.

Sigh of relief that the tsunami waves did not impact Hawaii, US or Central and South America as feared. Thank God for small or in this case BIG favors.

Tragedy For the Dalai Lama

The Dalai Lama's 45 year old nephew, Jigme K. Norbu, was killed yesterday during a "Walk for Tibet" in Florida. He was hit by a SUV. The driver, 31, has not been charged and had his two young children in the truck with him. Sad.

In 1959 the Dalai Lama escaped Chinese prosecution and fled Tibet with his brother, Taktser Rinpoche, Jigme's father. They were running for their very lives as at that time, China would have killed them in an instant without hesitation. Takster was in 1959 a high Abbott at a monastery in Tibet.

Since then, The Dalai Lama has acheived the impossible. He has become a world reknown statesman and a voice for peace, freedom and democracy in every land on Earth except his own. What China does to Tibetans, as Hamlet's father would say "would harrow your very soul."

His brother, Rinpoche, who died in September 2008 at 86, was a professor of Tibetan studies at Indiana University in Bloomington while serving as the Dalai Lama's U.S. representative.

We'd say they both achieved so much while being barred from their own homeland. Jigme died trying to save his father's land and what should have been his birthright as well.

It's never too late to put pressure on China to release Tibet. Indeed the day this happens will be one the greatest joys you can imagine. The Tibetan people have tried to rise up, like Egypt. They aren't just sitting there taking it, but they are overwhelmingly outnumbered by the Chinese military who use horrific tactics to beat them down. We have to say this, although you might want to cover your eyes, just so you know how bad it is...the Chinese use electric cattle prods to rape the Tibetan nuns. This has been documented by Amnesty International. They also keep the Tibetan monks in inches of water and use the prongs to electrocute them as daily torture.

But you know what? There are STILL Tibetan monks and nuns practicing their religion in Tibet. They haven't given up even though they know if caught what will happen.

To this day there is still no international rush to help from ANYONE, including the US or England. It's so damn sad. You see, there's no oil in Tibet. So why should any civilized country care?

And in James Bond News...

Sadly, we lost composer John Barry the other day. Barry was responsible for the most famous score in cinematic history, the James Bond Theme Song, ultimately working on 11 Bond films. He also scored Dances with Wolves, Out of Africa and one of our favorites of all time Born Free. He won 5 Academy awards for his work and is hailed as one of the most prolific and talented movie composers of all time.

Born Free

Born free, as free as the wind blows
As free as the grass grows
Born free to follow your heart

Live free, and beauty surrounds you
The world still astounds you
Each time you look at a star

Stay free, where no walls divide you
You're free as a roaring tide
So there's no need to hide

Born free, and life is worth living
But only worth living
Cause you're born free

In good news, Javier Bardem, has just been cast as the main villain in the new upcoming Bond film. Yay!

"Say hello to the bad guy!"

He and his wife, Penelope Cruz, just had their first baby the other day. Javier was also just nominated for Best Actor for the Spanish film Biutiful, which itself is nominated for Best Foreign Film. He's having a hell of a week!
