Uh-Oh. Dr. Hawass has his panties bunched again. This time it is New York City that faces his potential wrath. He has threatened to take back Cleopatra's Needle, the 71-foot, 224-ton obelisk, that has been monumented in Central Park since installed by George Vanderbuilt in January of 1881.
"I am glad that this monument has become such an integral part of New York City, but I am dismayed at the lack of care and attention that it has been given," Hawass wrote. "Recent photographs that I have received show the severe damage that has been done to the obelisk, particularly to the hieroglyphic text, which in places has been completely worn away. I have a duty to protect all Egyptian monuments whether they are inside or outside of Egypt. If the Central Park Conservancy and the City of New York cannot properly care for this obelisk, I will take the necessary steps to bring this precious artifact home and save it from ruin."
New York denies any damage and says "its not true." Liar, liar pants on fire! The damage is clear to anyone to see. Probably from acid rain and other pollution. And isn't Mayor Bloomberg crying that there's no money for anything anymore? They aren't going to save it. The Vanderbuilt/Astor - aka big money days - are over.
We're on the Pharaoh's side on this one. Take it back and preserve it!
