Internet Blackout to Protest "SOPA" and "PIPA"

The Omni Report is joining the Internet Blackout today in solidarity.

From: ABC News Article

PIPA is a Senate bill originally called the Protect IP Act. “IP” is short, in this case, for Intellectual Property, such as movies, music or writing that, in the digital age, can easily be copied and transmitted online without payment to their creators.

SOPA — the Stop Online Piracy Act — is a similar bill in the House.

The idea of both, as described by their sponsors, was to stop the illegal copying of movies or music, something that Hollywood studios, music publishers and many others believe is threatening their businesses. Supporters range from the Country Music Association to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, from the Motion Picture Association of America to the AFL-CIO.

Internet entities such as Wikipedia, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and Tumblr said the two bills would force them to be online police and hold them responsible if users of their sites link to pirated content.

The companies said the bills could require your Internet provider to block websites that are involved in digital file sharing. And search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing could be stopped from linking to them — antithetical, they argue, to the ideal of an open Internet.

“While I support their goal of reducing copyright infringement (which I don’t believe these acts would accomplish), I am shocked that our lawmakers would contemplate such measures that would put us on a par with the most oppressive nations in the world,” said Sergey Brin, one of the co-founders of Google, in a December post on Google+.

The White House weighed in on Jan. 14. In a post on the White House website, the U.S. Chief Technology Officer and two colleagues wrote, “While we believe that online piracy by foreign websites is a serious problem that requires a serious legislative response, we will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet.”

So, we join Wikipedia, Reddit and more of our favorite sites by protesting censorship in any form. Although we do understand the need for Intellectual Rights and Privacy Laws, forcing sites to be "their own police" under threat is just simply against our religion.

And in More British News...Fenton the Dog

Ahhh, the calm tranquility of London's Richmond Park. The deer are plenty and are grazing peacefully. The traffic on the boundary road is light and the day is just clear and perfect. What a nice day to walk the dog.

Once you watch this video you'll see why it's gone viral. And if you've ever owned a dog that tends to chase things, you can feel this guys embarrassing pain.

Care to bet on who can run faster - a herd of deer, a dog named Fenton or a man? Hint: It is SO not the man.

And since the deer were not hurt, we find it hilarious.

Best. Halloween. House. Ever.

We're not sure who these people are but they are rockin' it big time for Halloween. They went with "party house" for Halloween and not "haunted house" but because they did it right, we'll let it pass. WTG, people!

The "NoNoNoNo" Cat

This has to be seen to be believed and even then it may just be "enhanced" video. But for sure, it's pretty fucked up. And hilarious.

Most cats will run when they are scared, but this guy just keeps fluffing up and fluffing up and arching his back and yelling "No!"

Shark Week vs. Bear Week

Discovery Channel fans everywhere are celebrating Shark Week, to the tune of almost 35 million viewers nightly.

It has been pointed out, correctly so, that we shouldn't be afraid of sharks, we should be afraid for them. They are being hunted mercilessly for their fins and cruelly attacked and "finned" before being let go to die in agony.

So go and protect a shark. It's the right thing to do.

Now, however, although sharks are awesomely awesome in every way, the entire Shark Week..week..is being contested by the guys and gals over at Collegehumor.com.

In an insanely hilarious piece, Kevin Corrigan, has put together the top ten reasons to have BEAR Week instead of Shark Week.

Read Kevin's college humor here. You won't regret it.

Imagine if they were BOTH!

Breaking News: News is FAILing!

World, we have a problem. It's the 24/7 feed-the-beast news cycle.

"You can't believe everything you read" has never been a truer axiom. With the rush to fill every second of every day with fresh Breaking News, major outlets are failing every day at bringing us ACCURATE news.

Here are two examples from JUST THIS WEEK!

Case in Point #1:

Headline:
Internet Explorer Users Have a Lower IQ (than people who use other web browsers)

This one should have caught someone's attention before the rush to publish it in every newspaper and Internet news site in the entire world.

This "news" article was a complete HOAX, even down to the phony website that listed the information.

The only outlet that questioned the authenticity of the article was the BBC.

Original article from our local Fox affiliate

The Real News - It's a Hoax

Case in Point #2:

Headline:
Amy Winehouse Was About to Adopt a Child

We didn't believe this one from the get-go but don't tell the reporters that spread this falsehood like wildfire.

It was retracted the next day after it had been posted as real by...again...every newspaper and Internet news site in the entire world.

Original UK article

CBS.com retraction

Of course, no news article is actually "retracted". They just publish the "truth" the next day and if you missed it but caught the first, you'll never know you were duped.

In both of these cases the news itself was throw away news. Who cares if Internet Explorer users are dumber than rocks or if Winehouse wanted to or was going to be a mom?

However, how much of the news that we rely on for world or financial information is also false?

Is there any accountability in this day and age? Can you literally publish anything and get away with it? Even if you are an "accredited newsource"?

We checked The Drudge Report, the right-wing extremist news site and found they have linked to false stories like the Internet Explorer story the other day.

SURVEY: Internet Explorer users have lower IQs... ^
From the August 01, 2011 13:13:47 GMT edition of the Drudge Report.

True, they are a just a blog...like us...but in the rush to "print", they will hand out false story links like candy - 24/7.

How in the world are people to know or accept that the news story they are reading about is true at all? Do we have to give a 24hr "breather" before we believe or act on a particular story?

Can we only believe its-happening-live-on-tv-right-in-front-of-us-news?

As we go forward into this technological age we are living in, these questions will have to answered and news outlets will have to face accountability. Especially before they inadvertently cause mass trauma over a "terror threat" or something else that turns out to be a non-existent falsehood.

While we are bashing the news organizations that are supposed to give us real news, read this Blog from Al Gore.

His point is well taken although we're 100% sure that the news people will completely ignore it.

Oceanic Anomaly Has UFOlogists Abuzz

Sonar image of the "USO" - Unidentified Submerged Object

On June 19m 2011 the Swedish team Ocean Explorers discovered something weird on the ocean floor between Finland and Sweden in the Gulf of Bothnia.

Peter Lindberg's team was looking for a shipwreck containing a consignment of 1907 Heidsick Monopole Gout Americain Champagne (very rare) worth $13,000 a piece to collectors.

Instead of the ship, Jonkoping, what they found has Internet Ufologists talking alien submerged spaceships.

"At 87m down, between Sweden and Finland, they saw a large circle, about 60 feet in diameter," he told local media last week.

"You see a lot of weird stuff in this job but during my 18 years as a professional I have never seen anything like this.

"The shape is completely round … a circle."

Mr Lindberg said the team has also noted what they say could possibly be tracks running some 300m up to where the disc lies.

The team claims the tracks show the object has moved, either on or since settling to the ocean floor.

His team refuses to dive to it...after all they were looking for sunken ships and champagne...and no one wants to spend the money to dive to what may be a natural formation.

So it's up to the world. Maybe Richard Branson or James Cameron would fund a dive to it. After all, it may be natural but if it isn't...

Either this cat gets attacked all the time and is over it, or he just doesn't care much.

A Blood Red Moon

The highly anticipated lunar eclipse is going to happen very soon...only not in North America.

The best places to view it live and in person are in Europe, Asia and Africa.

However, because its 2011, we get to watch it live on the Internet!

Google.com is going to stream it live over their famous "doodle" which all day has already been a lunar eclipse.

Youtube.com is also going to have it along with a dozen or so other sites.

The entire process will last five hours, 36 minutes, ending at 7 p.m. ET, making it the longest one of the 21st century.

Not only that but it will turn the moon a red color.

"All lunar eclipses are cool, but in a total lunar eclipse, the moon turns a kind of a red color. The middle of Earth's shadow isn't black, it's red, Dundee explained, because the light waves from the sun that are on the red end of the spectrum bend around the planet at just the right angle to bathe the moon in red light."

Amazing!

Beatrice's Hat

And oh, what an overnight sensation the hat has been!

Then things started popping out of it!

Then it went "Retro"

And it reminded people of a toilet:

But then Famous People started wearing it!

Today it is being auctioned off for charity. Good riddance to the dumbest hat ever.

How about two dolphins?
How about one cat and two dolphins playing and being cute together?

IT'S SO CUTE IT WILL PROBABLY KILL YOU.

Another Baby Video

This one is so cute. Everytime the baby's mom sneezes the baby freaks out and then laughs his head off.

We're not sure why the internet was invented but this has to one of at least 2 reasons. Baby and animal videos.
