Remembering the Good Doctor

Today would have been DeForest Kelley's 92nd birthday. He passed away in 1999 and is remembered most for his iconic character, Dr. "Bones" McCoy, on Star Trek.

Dee, to his friends and Trekkies everywhere, was of course awesome on Star Trek playing foil to Spock, but he was well known in Hollywood before that role.

His filmography is intense. He has over 129 acting credits, the vast majority coming from the 1950's and '60's when he was the bad guy in Western movies. He acted with Burt Lancaster, Anthony Quinn and Henry Fonda among a few. He was also in television acting for a young Gene Roddenberry who then cast the veteran actor as the lovable snarky doctor in Star Trek.

He was also a poet, publishing 2 books.

His cameo in the pilot ep of Star Trek: The Next Generation as a grizzled very old Dr. McCoy who comments to Data about the Enterprise, "Treat her like a lady and she'll always get you home", still brings a tear to our eye.

R.I.P! We still miss you and the thought of Mint Juleps.

Happy Birthday, Zack de la Rocha!

One serious motherfucker

Happy Birthday to our favorite Revolutionary! Zack, front man genius of Rage Against the Machine, turns 42 today.

Rage's rage, channeled so eloquently by Zack, was a churning political force throughout the 1990's. When they disbanded in 2000 it left an unfillable void that no other band could ever live up to. Rage was the fucking best of all time.

They have subsequently reunited for brief concerts and briefer tours and it's apparent they still love to play live. However, no more studio albums are in the works as Zack said in 2008 "We’re going to keep playing shows – we have a couple of big ones happening in front of both conventions. As far as us recording music in the future, I don’t know where we all fit with that. We’ve all embraced each other’s projects and support them, and that’s great."

The best thing that happened recently was their song "Killing in the Name" reaching NUMBER ONE on the U.K. CHRISTMAS chart in 2009. The kids of England really got The Man on this one and it was incredibly fucking awesome.

Zack had this to say about it in an interview with BBC1: "We're very very ecstatic and excited about the song reaching the number one spot. We want to thank everyone that participated in this incredible, organic, grass-roots campaign. It says more about the spontaneous action taken by young people throughout the UK to topple this very sterile pop monopoly. When young people decide to take action they can make what's seemingly impossible, possible."

Rage influenced us in so many ways it's ridiculous. They fucking rock. Happy Birthday, Zack.

"You may kill the revolutionary but you can't kill the revolution" Fred Hampton

Here's some videos. Spool 'em and then TURN IT UP!

The greatest anthem ever: "Know Your Enemy"
LOOK AT ALL THOSE PEOPLE.
"Born with insight and a raised fist! A witness to the slit wrist as we move into '92, still in a room without a view...
The land of the free?
Whoever told you that is your enemy!"

Rage's #1 Christmas song, UK 2009 - "Killing in the Name"
Again, watch the crowd. They go fucking wild! RATM RULES!
(shout out to Tommy M playing half naked!)
"FUCK YOU I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME!"

"Bombtrack"
Again, the people! Rage plays around the world and gets 100,000 people AT A TIME! They are LOVED.
"Instead I warm my hands upon the flames of the flag
As I recall our downfall And the business that burned us all
See through the news and the views that twist reality"

"People of the Sun"
"Since 1516 minds attacked and overseen
Now crawl amidst the ruins of this empty dream"

Testify" - the video version
"The movie ran through me,The glamour subdue me
The tabloid untie me, I'm empty please fill me
Mister anchor assure me, that Baghdad is burning
Your voice it is so soothing, that cunning mantra of killing

Happy Birthday, Viggo!

Hollywood's hottest actor, Academy Award nominee Viggo Mortensen, turns 53 today.

Viggo starred in dozens of movies before hitting it big as Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings. He was The King in Return of the King. The movie that took 11 Oscars in 2004.

You've known Viggo since his fist movie "Witness" with Harrison Ford, or maybe you saw "A Perfect Murder" where he starred with Gwyneth Paltrow and Michael Douglas, or "Carlito's Way" with Al Pacino and Sean Penn or "Crimson Tide" with Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman or "Portrait of a Lady" with John Malkovich and Nicole Kidman or "GI Jane" with Demi Moore or "A Walk on the Moon" with Diane Lane and Liev Schreiber or "28 Days" with Sandra Bullock or "Hildago" with Omar Sharif or "A History of Violence" and "Appaloosa" with Ed Harris or "The Road" with Charlize Theron, Robert Duvall and Guy Pierce...

You kind of get the picture here. Viggo has been in everything with everyone and is highly sought after.

He will star next in "A Dangerous Method" as Sigmund Freud and has 2 other movies in the can, as well.

We've met Viggo, hugged and kissed Viggo and LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT.

One of the nicest guys you'll ever meet in the business, not to mention the most talented.

Did we mention he's also a published poet, musician, photographer and painter? All of the paintings in "A Perfect Murder" were his. And his photos are super-artistic. You can find ALL his books at Amazon.com HERE.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY VIGGO!

Happy Birthday John Lithgow

One of our favorite actors, John Lithgow, turns 66 today.

Everything John is in is great. He was utter perfection in "Third Rock", the most deliciously evil villain in "Cliffhanger" and an absolute riot in "Buckaroo Bonzai".

And the other 10,000 movie and TV roles he's been a part of.

Did anyone else love "Harry and the Hendersons"?

He's been nominated for the Oscar twice - and should have won - and has more than 20 other acting awards. He rocks.

Happy Birthday, Goran!

Goran Ivanisevic turns 39 today!

One of our favorite tennis players OF ALL TIME, Goran is still missed on the circuit.

Here are the final moments of the match that won us hundreds of dollars on our Vegas bet that year. A match we will never ever forget. A total Classic. We hated to bet against our other favorite at the time, Patrick Rafter but we KNEW, we just KNEW that Goran had it in him to win this one. And in classic fashion!

Happy Birthday, Graham Hancock

Our favorite author and iconoclast, Graham Hancock, turns 61 this week.

His books are a remarkable, awesome and life-changing look at archeology and it's current restraints.

In the majority of his books, Hancock sets out to change the norm which is the pathetic paradigm that our society as we know it is the apex of civilization as it ever was on the planet.

His latest non-fictional work, Supernatural, is his best yet. This book deviates from the archaeological "norm" of his prior works and explores the Shamanic Legacies around the globe, their common elements and connections with the other worlds "within". This book is the "Gateway Drug" that can open your mind to serious new potential. We had never heard of DMT* before and now we want to know everything.

1992: The Sign and the Seal: The Quest for the Lost Ark of the Covenant

1995: Fingerprints of the Gods: The Evidence of Earth's Lost Civilization

1996: The Message of the Sphinx: A Quest for the Hidden Legacy of Mankind. Published in the United Kingdom as Keeper of Genesis: A Quest for the Hidden Legacy of Mankind

1998: The Mars Mystery: A Tale of the End of Two Worlds

1998: Heaven's Mirror: Quest for the Lost Civilization

2001: Fingerprints of the Gods: The Quest Continues (New Updated Edition)

2002: Underworld: The Mysterious Origins of Civilization

2004: Talisman: Sacred Cities, Secret Faith

2005: Supernatural: Meeting with the Ancient Teachers of Mankind

2010: Entangled: The Eater of Souls, this is his first book of non-fiction. And if you think Graham is a stuffy old Brit, then be amazed! His "tripping" with ayahuasca has obviously opened his mind to an entirely new level. We LOVED it and can't wait for the sequel.

Graham Hancock's next book, The Master Game, is due soon and is another collaboration with the awesome Robert Bauval. Bauval is known for his Orion Correlation Theory.

Hancock's basic theory is that we are "a civilization, a species with amnesia". Here is a quote from Fingerprints of the Gods:

"..., there is a common legacy of all these world wide ancient civilizations that they do not even address. This legacy lies not in the 'modern' myth of Atlantis, but in the myths and legends of each of these civilizations which make common reference to cataclysms, especially floods, similar gods or god experiences, and precessional and other astronomically significant numbers, etc, etc. The writing, architecture, and agriculture of these ancients are by products of their development which had its roots in a lost civilization of 12,000 years ago."

Graham Hancock.com

* We HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend the book, DMT: The Spirit Molecule, by Dr. Rick Strassman. This is conconscious altering stuff, folks. The subject matter is pretty heavy, but the book is easy to read and follow as are Graham's books. It's WELL WORTH the read. This is knowledge everyone should have. An absolute must.

Happy Birthday Jesse Ventura

Jesse is one bad ass motherfucker

It's a good thing I'm not president because I would prosecute every person that was involved in that torture. I would prosecute the people that did it. I would prosecute the people that ordered it. Because torture is against the law. ... Waterboarding is drowning. It gives you the complete sensation that you are drowning. It is no good, because you — I'll put it to you this way, you give me a water board, Dick Cheney and one hour, and I'll have him confess to the Sharon Tate murders. ... If it's done wrong, you certainly could drown. You could swallow your tongue. It could do a whole bunch of stuff to you. If it's done wrong or — it's torture...It's torture."
Jesse Ventura - pro wrestler/UDT Navy diver/ex-Governor of Minnesota

Jesse Ventura, American legend, turns 60 today.

Jesse has been famous for being a wrestler back in the day - nickname "The Body" - or, from being in 2 or 3 Arnold Schwarzenegger movies in the 80's - the great ones Predator and Running Man - or, from being the Governor of Minnesota - or from his latest TV show, "Conspiracy Theory with Jesse Ventura".

Jesse was also a frogman for the Navy's Underwater Demolition Team, a biker riding with the Mongols, a bodyguard for the Rolling Stones back in the 70's and the mayor of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota for 4 years.

He also has hosted a radio show, a TV show on MSNBC, acted on a soap opera and authored several books.

For all the good times and bad, that he had with the wrestling world, fame and lawsuits, Jesse was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2004.

That's probably not even the half of it.

Jesse catches shit from a lot of people over his politics, demeanor, conspiracy theories and so forth, but not from us. He's our hero. Of course he has flaws and is subject to arrogance and entitlement, but he EARNED it. He's a bad ass motherfucker.

And when we think of America, we like to think of guys like Jesse Ventura, out there doing real things and keeping people honest. Next to John Walsh, he's one of our favorite good guys. Plus, he wants to waterboard, Dick Cheney. How awesome is that?

Happy 40th Birthday, KOKO

Koko, the Western Lowland Gorilla adopted by the San Diego Zoo decades ago, was born July 4th, 1971. Her name means "fireworks child."

Koko is an ordinary gorilla that was raised and lives in remarkable circumstances. Her abilities are not remarkable, but the circumstances that gave her the gift to be taught human communication are. And for that, she is a remarkable, unique, wonderful and amazing animal.

To manipulate a quote from Star Trek "Of all the gorillas we have known...Koko is the most...human."

To date, she has mastered over 1,000 English words using sign language and over 2,000 words of spoken English.

She is able to talk and communicate her feelings and thoughts. It is well known that Koko loves kittens and over the years many kittens have been introduced for her to live with and take care of.

For a long time Koko had a "mate" named Michael. Koko was supposed to have a baby with Michael but instead told their keeper, Penny Patterson, that she considered Michael like a brother and could not mate with him and have a much desired baby.

Koko has always wanted to me a mother.

Michael died in 2000 but before that he had told Penny that he remembered being captured as a baby and how he was forced to see his parents being slaughtered in a bush raid. He said they were shot.

Michael was in command of just 600 words compared to Koko's 3,000 and managed to tell a remarkable story.

We can learn so much from the animals that we can communicate with...as people.

Visit Koko at her website: http://www.koko.org/index.php

Walt Whitman

Today is the 192nd anniversary of the Great Walt Whitman's birth.

One of our favorite poets, EVER, 'ole Walt lives on through his tremendous body of work.

In Honor, today we will post some of our faves. Alas, it is hard to just pick a few.

Black Cat Poems.com has an extensive list of Walt Whitman's poems online.

From Leaves of Grass, our favorite poetry book of all time.

O Captain! My Captain!

O Captain! my Captain! our fearful trip is done,
The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won,
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring;
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up -- for you the flag is flung -- for you the bugle trills,
For you bouquets and ribbon'd wreaths -- for you the shores a-crowding,
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head!
It is some dream that on the deck,
You've fallen cold and dead.

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still,
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will,
The ship is anchor'd safe and sound, its voyage closed and done,
From fearful trip the victor ship comes in with object won;
Exult O shores, and ring O bells!
But I with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

And a poem in honor of Memorial Day. Whitman lived through the Civil War and much of his poetry is about this time. His book "Memoranda of the War" contains much of this work.

Vigil Strange I Kept on the Field One Night

Vigil strange I kept on the field one night;
When you my son and my comrade dropt at my side that day,
One look I but gave which your dear eyes return'd with a look I shall never forget,
One touch of your hand to mine O boy, reach'd up as you lay on the ground,
Then onward I sped in the battle, the even-contested battle,
Till late in the night reliev'd to the place at last again I made my way,
Found you in death so cold dear comrade, found your body son of responding kisses, (never again on earth responding,)
Bared your face in the starlight, curious the scene, cool blew the moderate night-wind,
Long there and then in vigil I stood, dimly around me the battle-field spreading,
Vigil wondrous and vigil sweet there in the fragrant silent night,
But not a tear fell, not even a long-drawn sigh, long, long I gazed,
Then on the earth partially reclining sat by your side leaning my chin in my hands,
Passing sweet hours, immortal and mystic hours with you dearest comrade -- not a tear, not a word,
Vigil of silence, love and death, vigil for you my son and my soldier,
As onward silently stars aloft, eastward new ones upward stole,
Vigil final for you brave boy, (I could not save you, swift was your death,
I faithfully loved you and cared for you living, I think we shall surely meet again,)
Till at latest lingering of the night, indeed just as the dawn appear'd,
My comrade I wrapt in his blanket, envelop'd well his form,
Folded the blanket well, tucking it carefully over head and carefully under feet,
And there and then and bathed by the rising sun, my son in his grave, in his rude-dug grave I deposited,
Ending my vigil strange with that, vigil of night and battle-field dim,
Vigil for boy of responding kisses, (never again on earth responding,)
Vigil for comrade swiftly slain, vigil I never forget, how as day brighten'd,
I rose from the chill ground and folded my soldier well in his blanket,
And buried him where he fell.

The last stanza of "Song of the Open Road"

Camerado, I give you my hand!
I give you my love more precious than money,
I give you myself before preaching or law;
Will you give me yourself? will you come travel with me?
Shall we stick by each other as long as we live?

And the first stanza of "To think of time

To think of time--of all that retrospection,
To think of to-day, and the ages continued henceforward.

Have you guess'd you yourself would not continue?
Have you dreaded these earth-beetles?
Have you fear'd the future would be nothing to you?

Is to-day nothing? is the beginningless past nothing?
If the future is nothing they are just as surely nothing.

To think that the sun rose in the east--that men and women were
flexible, real, alive--that every thing was alive,
To think that you and I did not see, feel, think, nor bear our part,
To think that we are now here and bear our part.

To our Delaware Valley Friends: Walt Whitman is buried in Camden, NJ. His cemetery is BEAUTIFUL and his final resting place is just amazing. Yes, it's in Camden. We've been there and it's worth the trip to go and recite a few poems to the old man in "person".

3 Legendary Birthdays Today

Today's, April 5th birthdays include:

Bette Davis (April 5, 1908 – October 6, 1989)

Spencer Tracy (April 5, 1900 – June 10, 1967)

Gregory Peck (April 5, 1916 – June 12, 2003)

Amazing that three of the best actors EVER, all shared the SAME birthday.

Our favorite roles for each:

Well, for Bette, hands down it's "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" in which she plays a child star turned psycho and torments the hell out of her sister Joan Crawford. It earned her her 10th and final Oscar Nom. A close second for "Jezebel" for which she won her second Oscar.

Bette was a phenom! She was the first female president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress twice, was the first person to accrue 10 Academy Award nominations for acting, and was the first woman to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute.

You don't get much better than that and in deed no one is even close.

Our favorite role for Spencer Tracy has absolutely nothing to do with Katherine Hepburn. It's for one our favorite movies OF ALL TIME: "Inherit the Wind." This movie is so awesome it defies even itself for its awesomeness. About the "Scopes Monkey Trial" it involves a big league New York Attorney (Tracy) and his defense of a poor Southern schoolteacher (Dick York of Bewitched fame) in a small Southern town opposed to the teachings of evolution. Oh and Harry Morgan is The Judge! It has the best dialogue in the history of cinema. THE BEST.

Second and third favorites go to Spencer Tracy in: "The Old Man and the Sea" and "Guess Who's Coming for Dinner."

He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor on nine occasions, winning twice.

And last but not least, our favorite! Gregory Peck. He was incredibly handsome with a deep melodious and sexy voice. Movie Star all the way! Peck was much beloved in Hollywood.

His most famous film was "To Kill a Mockingbird", where he played Atticus Finch in another courtroom drama as a lawyer defending a black man accused of raping a white woman. Peck gives an outstanding performance.

We thought he was great as Captain Ahab in Moby Dick, Roman Holiday with Audrey Hepburn and in all those WWII movies he did.

Peck was nominated for 5 Academy Awards winning once.

He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969 for his lifetime humanitarian efforts. In 1999, the American Film Institute named Peck among the Greatest Male Stars of All Time, ranking at #12.

He served as the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1967, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the American Film Institute from 1967 to 1969,and was a member of the National Council on the Arts from 1964 to 1966."

Sebastian is the lead singer of Skid Row and one of the coolest dudes in music.

Youth Gone Wild is one of our favorite songs EVER.

Happy Birthday Angus Young

Angus Young turns 56 today...and he is still rockin' the old school boy uniform!

AC/DC is one of the most influencial, successful and famous bands in history and Angus is unarguably one of the best guitarists ever.

Contrary to the notion that he is Australian, he was born in Scotland and moved to Australia as a kid, but has lived there ever since. One of the first things he and his brother, Malcolm, did when they "got money" was to get their teeth fixed! Awesome!

Also, HE FOUNDED THE BAND! In 1973, with Malcolm. ANGUS YOUNG IS AC/DC! In 2006, they were called "one of the most important and influential rock bands in history".

DUH, WINNING!

We can't tell you how much we love this band or all of its songs. In fact, one of our VERY FIRST ALBUMS was Back in Black that WE WON at Summer Camp, back in the day! How much do you love Highway to Hell, Whole Lot of Rosie, For Those About to Rock!, You Shook Me All Night Long, Hells Bells! We could go ON AND ON.

TURN IT UP AND ROCK OUT!

Here's AC/DC: Thunderstruck
Watch Angus strut his stuff! He's so friggin' awesome! Happy Birthday Dude!

Happy 80th Birthday, William Shatner!

The Captain has turned 80!

We've always joked that we don't know who the hell William Shatner is but somewhere young gorgeous Captain Kirk is still out saving the galaxy.

Kudos to Bill, who has 2 hit shows on right now. "Shit my Dad Says" on CBS is a pretty funny show. He plays a curmudgeony old bastard, ala Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino...and does it very well.

His other show "Shatner's Raw Nerve" is an interview show with a wide range of celebrities. It's "hard hitting" and Bill always gets the celeb to tackle subjects he or she would never normally talk about which leads to very revealing and humanizing moments for the celebs. It's pretty good.

William Shatner is a television and acting legend. Forget Star Trek for a moment. Bill has been on so many TV shows and always kicked ass. He's got a rep for being an arrogant bastard but that's just the way he is. Never forget he was trained as a classical Shakespearean actor and did tons of movies before he ever did TV.

His acting career spans decades.. he was Ranger Bob on Howdy Doody back on the 1950's. Plus he did great guest spots on awesome shows like "The Outer Limits", "Gunsmoke" and "Twilight Zone".

Recently, he did the Emmy nominated show "Boston Legal" and he was just on an episode of "American Pickers".

Bill is a HORSE fanatic. He loves them. Back in the 70's and 80's he used to always come to Pennsylvania every year for the famed Devon Horse Show and show off his own horses. He's pretty awesome.

Happy B'day, Bill!

Happy Belated Birthday to Giorgio Tsoukalos!

Sorry we missed his birthday on March 14th!

Giorgio runs the magazine Legendary Times and is a huge supporter of the Ancient Astronaut Theory. He counts Erich Von Daniken as a close friend and is the Director of Erich's Center for Ancient Astronaut Research. He writes amazing articles regarding the Theory.

Giorgio came to our attention during the History Channel's series Ancient Aliens. His enthusiasm for the show (he is the producer after all) is contagious.

He is known for his crazy hair, which has it's own fan page on Facebook. However, it is his unwavering faith in the Theory which makes us love him. Someday, people will accept this as fact and not fiction and people like us will be vindicated. Until then, we have Giorgio to keep publishing great articles with all the facts about it.

You can find Giorgio on Facebook and Twitter.

Here is a link to The Legendary Times Bookstore.

Happy Birthday Alan Rickman!

Happy 60th to Alan Rickman, another one of favorite actors. Rickman has been in over 30 movies. Known for being "The Villian" in most of them - "Die Hard", "Robin Hood", "Harry Potter", he also has an impressive romantic comedy side - "Truly, Madly, Deeply", "Love Actually" AND a hysterically funny side - "Galaxy Quest".

He's been in some of our favorite movies of all time. He stole the entire Robin Hood movie, as the Sherriff of Nottingham, right out from Kevin Costner. We love his line - "Cut his heart out with a spoon! - It'll hurt more!"

This may not be his greatest scene in Galaxy Quest, but by Grapthor's Hammer, it's still good! Check out the all-star cast...
