We've always liked Gilbert. His stuff on The Howard Stern Show was always hilarious. He's always, always, always been politically incorrect and inappropriate. It's his schtick.
Gilbert violated 2 rules:
1) It really was too soon. Maybe in few weeks when the situation is under control it would've maybe still not been funny, but okay.
2) 75% of Aflac's business is in Japan! That was a Major Fuck Up. We'd have to fire him too if we ran that company. Of all the companies in the world to represent and then tweet jokes about...
Bad timing, bad judgement.
However, we thought they were almost funny. Of course it's too soon and were we rolling on the floor thinking we just heard the funniest thing ever...NO. But we did chuckle a bit.
Anyway, comedians are coming out of the woodwork to defend Gilbert and we join them. Joan Rivers, Howard Stern, Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar have all expressed solidarity for Gilbert.
Joy summed it up: "Comics have never been appropriate".
We'd like to add, "It's what they do."
Gilbert was trying to take the edge off. There's worse in the world and he doesn't deserve to be crucified over it. Shunned for a week or two maybe, but not crucified.
He'll never get his job back with Aflac though. And that was his only gig. Why else do you think he was twittering jokes instead of doing them at a club? Poor Gilbert. We feel sorry for him. Not as sorry as we do for the poor people of Japan... but you know what we mean, right?

UPDATE: We are taking flak for this. To clarify, we don't agree with what he said or did. We only think he shouldn't be raked over the coals. Was he rude? YES. Insensitive and a jerk? YES! Okay. We're over it.
