The World's Youngest Grandmother

How old were you when you became a grandmother? For one child woman in Romania it's 23 years old.

Rifca eloped at age 11, married a 13 year old boy and became pregnant with her first child, Maria, just a year later, when she was 12.

We are guessing things are a little different in Romania than the US...

Anyway, the little girl, Maria, following in mom's footsteps also eloped...at AGE 10. She had her little baby at age 11, a boy named Ion, making Rifca the world's youngest grandma at 23.

Rifca is happy with her grandson, Ion, now 2 years old but laments, "I am happy to be a grandmother but wished more for Maria."

It's seems none of these people have any hope for an education there, so we're not sure what she had hoped for. That Maria would wait to be 16 and then have the babies? Life seems extraordinarily difficult in Romania. We wish these women had a better chance at life...and access to birth control.
